Strait of Hormuz: Ships Are Moving, But Don’t Call It Normal
In the past three weeks, nearly 40 vessels previously trapped in the Persian Gulf have transited the Strait of Hormuz with U.S. Navy coordination. However, commercial shipping remains well below pre-war levels, with Lloyd’s List Intelligence noting that May saw the lowest traffic of the conflict. Vessels must either obtain clearance from Tehran to use an approved route or risk drone and missile attacks. U.S. CENTCOM reports redirecting 127 commercial ships and disabling 6 vessels attempting unauthorized passages as of June 4. S&P experts estimate it could take up to six months to restore 80% of pre-conflict shipping levels, even if hostilities cease immediately.
